    The Jonel Fund Scholarship

This scholarship is presented in memory of Jonel Hoogterp, Julie Hatch, and Sara Dobbrastine whose lives were tragically ended July 2009. Jonel was valedictorian of the 2001 Engadine High School graduating class. She earned all-UP Basketball honors in 2001. She received a degree from Aquinas College, and was working as a volunteer EMT at the time of her death. Jonel's partner, Julie Hatch, was a postal worker in Durham, NC and was a graduate of Corning Community College. She was named a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American in basketball for 1998. Sara Dobbrastine was a graduate of Montabella High School and attended Montcalm Community College. She was engaged to marry into the Hoogterp family, and wanted to become a veterinarian.

The initial donation of $5,000 toward the fund was from co-workers of Jonel's uncle, Dan Hoogterp at Bankrate, Inc. Including other subsequent donations, the balance is now $6,000. Other parties are invited to contribute to continue to benefit the community in honor of those who lost their lives in this tragedy.
